Yikes! 20 Big Ones at the Pittsburgh Technology Council

By Jonathan Kersting, Vice President of Communications and Media, Pittsburgh Technology Council

Time surely does fly when you’re having fun.

I know this firsthand as I mark my 20th year with TEQ magazine and the Pittsburgh Technology Council. When you have as much fun as I do, 20 years goes by at a time-warping speed that apparently bends the laws of physics, as I feel like I’ve been here for just a couple of years now.

And I absolutely love this time of year, as it not only marks my work anniversary, but it signals the PTC’s biggest, dare I say “baddest,” event of the year: Tech 50.

I’ve been a part of every Tech 50 since its inception in 1997. In fact, I remember quite clearly my first day of work on September 17, 1997, when one of my first assignments was to proof a grid of Tech 50 finalists for TEQ magazine.

The 50 tech companies completely mesmerized me. I had no idea Pittsburgh was home to such innovative ventures and super-smart men and women. Little did I know that Pittsburgh was home to way more than just those 50 fast-growing tech companies on that grid.

The 50 tech companies completely mesmerized me. I had no idea Pittsburgh was home to such innovative ventures and super-smart men and women.

Over the next 20 years, I got to know hundreds of tech companies. Some made it big. Some flamed out in dramatic style. And, so many others quietly grew to become the bedrock of our tech ecosystem.

It’s been a complete and total blast telling all of those companies’ stories with countless TEQ and Made in PA articles, TechVibe Radio interviews, Techburgher blog posts, tweet upon tweet, Facebook posts and oh so many other mediums.

It’s been a lot of work for sure, but it hardly feels like work to me. Actually, it feels like a helluva lot of fun. And that is why time is flying by so terribly quickly. Two more blinks, and I will be celebrating 40 years!
